family goes huckery this holiday. things are just getting started. but as always, it promises to be a really fun day. fox 5 morning news continues right now. t now. >> it is friday, december 7th, 2012. you are taking a live look at giant in brentwood this morning, one of several locations helping us out this year with stuff a truck. we've teamed one the capital area food bank to raise awareness about hunger here in the d.c. region and get you to help us stuff their truck with needed food items. that is i believe where our wisdom martin is at that location in brentwood. we'll be talking to him and holly morris this morning. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm allison seymour in for wisdom who is in brentwood for stuff a truck. our phone bank is open for business. if you would like to help out but can't really get to one of those locations today, we've got you covered on the phone.

some of seeing some light rain or even some sprinkles. not anybody seeing this. it will be off and on. just be prepared. no big downpours or washouts to talk about. we have a little bit to the far northwest in the panel, a little bit of freezing rain as well. that is the statement story up toward the mason-dixon line. let's take a look at those temperatures. right now, a chilly, cold for julie, 41 degrees at reagan national. 38 at dulles. yesterday's highs were in the 40s. today, we are going to be talking about a day where temperatures are close to seasonal. so spotty showers are what we're speaking about. as we move through into the course of tonight, lows are going to be kicking around into our 40s in the overnight hours. so not all bad. as we move through into the course of the day, can't give you much in sunshine at all. mainly overcast skies. 51-degree for your daytime high. >> i think you kind of have to put like an asterisk next to the temperature.

it is like, for julie wright, cold. you know what i mean. >> not cold for the canadian. >> you know what we're talking about. we have to put that in there for you. >> i'm a beach girl so anything like below 70, it is cold. i heard somebody on twitter talking about rain in hagerstown right now. as you were saying, some height showers. expect that drive as you travel on 70 or westbound depending on where you're traveling to to be a little slick this morning out the front door. eastbound along 66 coming in out of centreville, heavy volume right now. no incidents to report. we had a little crash earlier before you reach 29. that has been moved over to the shoulder. off tie slow start eastbound along 66 headed inbound towards fair oaks. we'll show you what else is happening out on the roads. top side of the beltway, everybody behaving nicely coming past colesville road headed over towards 270. 270 still quiet at this hour although the volume is increasing out of germantown headed southbound towards 124. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. affic.

now to our top stories, shaking in tokyo, japan. this hit shortly after 3:00 a.m. our time. this is video of the shaking from those cameras there. the preliminary magnitude is 7. 7.3. there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage. official called off the tsunami warning and this is the same area that was hit with the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in march of last year. an arrest in a drive-by shooting that killed a 14-year- old boy. jose rodriguez nunez is accused in the shooting that killed the teenage are and injured another man. a 14-year-old died when he was shot on sheridan street in lewisdale just after midnight wednesday. the suspect faces second degree

murder and other related charges. in northwest d.c., groundbreaking on a multimillion-dollar infrastructure project to prevent flash flooding is set to begin today and hopefully it will bring relief to the residents of the bloomingdale and ledroit park neighborhoods. some work has already begun between rhode island avenue and first street where six blocks of tunnels are being created and will be able to hold millions of gallons of water. it is time to get stuff a truck started this year. >> wisdom martin is live all morning long at the brentwood giant in northeast. how are things going out there? >> good morning. it is a little bit chilly out here. this is a very worthy cause. this is the capital area's biggest effort. we have to fill up these boxes with as much food as possible and then we put these boxes on that truck. all this food goes to feed all of the people in washington, the washington tease region who

today, the nation marks the 71st anniversary of the attack

on pearl harbor. nearly 400 americans were killed, almost 1200 injured in the japanese attack. that pulled the united states into world war ii. more than 2,000 people are expected to attend a ceremony at pearl harbor today. a moment of silence is planned for 7:55:00 a.m. local time mark the moment the bombing began. a former sailor who survived the attack will be among those honored today. 91-year-old ray emery has worked tire llsly to help identify the remains of coamings are previously unknown. john mcafee is back in jail in guatemala after a brief trip to the hospital. mcafee was arrested for illegally entering country wednesday after weeks in hiding. mcafee is aperson of interest in the november killing of his american neighbor in belize.

president obama took his pitch for preventing a fall off the fiscal cliff to a family in falls church yesterday. he did it to drive home the impact that many would feel approximate bush era tax cuts are allowed to expire with the average family expected to pay about $2200 more in taxes each year. coming up next, we will check in with holly. she is live in morning at the montrose crossing giant for stuff a truck 2012. find out more on how you can make this holiday a happy one for local families. we are checking back in with gwen for your weekend forecast. fox 5 morning news will be right back in a moment.

police have also released surveillance photos of two suspects accused of stealing cell phones and laptops from dorm rooms. some relief may be on the way for two neighborhoods known for flash flooding. >> cherrily is live in northwest with a preview of the project and dare i say really welcome news for folks in those areas. >> good morning. >> reporter: absolutely, especially when you see rain coming down again. it is a reminder of the flooding that happened in these neighborhoods. this project will involve a series of tunnels as well as storage tanks. it will cost likely $40 million more than previously mapped but the good news is it could bring we leave to these neighborhoods much sooner. -- than previouslily planned. some parts of the project have already begun along rhode island avenue and first street in northeast where workers are

digging some of the tunnels. they are looking at six blocks of tunnels that will eventually be able to store millions of gallons of storm water. it is expected to stop the flash floods that submerged parts of bloomingdale and ledroit park over and over again this summer. summer. it will take years to complete but should bring long-term relief. >> this will bring some of of the instructal ranges to the first industry corridor and rhode island avenue corridor and it will have a direct impact on the flooding that has been occurring over the summer and the thins have have been occurring for decades. >> reporter: home owners in these areas could also see some financial relief. legislation is penning to reimburse them for the flood damage and to pay for that, customers would see a 30 crept increase in their monthly water bills. -- legislation is pending to

the capital area food bank plays a crucial role in our community making sure families do not go hungry. >> we are teamingen up with the organization again this year for stuff a struck and wisdom is live at the brentwood giant in northeast d.c. with the latest going on out there. a little bit of dancing going on already early this morning. can you top that? >> a little bit of dancing. i'm not taking part. i'm just out here to encourage people to donate to the worthy cause. who knows. people want to come out and donate and they want to dance, there is a possibility. we'll talk about something else right now. this is jamie miller. he is from giant. tell us why it is important to come out here and do this. >> giant has been a supporter of the capital area food bank for over 30 years. the past few years, a lot of our neighbors have been struggling, ever since the downturn of the economy. we encourage our cut mir to come by during their lunch hour, when they get off of work, come by, drop off some

nonperishable food items. it will help out. people are really struggling during this challenging time with the economy and food bank needs the help right now. righ >> what has been the response? >> i've been part of this since the beginning about 11 years ago and each year, it just seems to get bigger and bigger. the response seems to get big are and bigger. i know last year, we collected over 60,000 pounds of food. we've got 12 other satellite locations this year where customers can come by and drop off food items. so i think we'll even increase the am this year over last year. >> okay. all right. thank you very much for coming out and talking with us. we appreciate all your efforts from giant as well. this is, as i said, a very worthy cause. we have all kind of entertainment out here. we have jazz musicians and the dancers out here. we'll be here throughout the morning. back to you in the studio. >> that is a good way to keep

forecast at all. and we are talking about temperatures which are actually going to be near seasonal. we haven't had that for a while. some spotty showers as i just mention ped and a big rise in temperatures that i think you're going to like. in the meantime, here is a look at those temperatures across our area. 3 take at dulles. -- as i just mentioned. 41 in the nation's capital. 35 at baltimore. a chilly 34 for cumberland. let's take a look at radar. we want to show you what is going on with that precipitation. as you can see, we've got some light rainfall, spotty showers here and there. some of you seeing a sprinkle. some of you seeing just a little bit more. it won't be a full washout into the course of the day. a little bit of freezing rain close to the mason-dixon line. some pockets of that into the course of the early-morning hours before that will be said and done. just keep the umbrella happy

and as i said be careful on the roads. we are there with a frondal system that will approach. it will remain cool and most hi cloudy skies. -- we are there with a frontal system that will approach. a mild day tomorrow as our temperatures head up into the 60s. this frontal system will head to the south and we'll deal with it as a back door cold front. in the meantime, 51 for today. 46-degree for tonight. light southerly wind flow. a chance of showers developing once again in the overnight hours. as we move through into tomorrow, warming up to the low 60s. not bad. sunday, we're back to umbrella weather once again. a chaps of that lingering in through to the monday as the mercury stays once again above seasonal. we are back to seasonal as we head into the thursday period. normally, we would have ask tony and tucker. however, that segment will not be aired today because we're doing so much with the capital food bank for you. and we'll be back to answer

that $3 helps feed -- for every dollar, we can provide three meals. >> that is a pretty good stretch. maybe people don't understand just how big the scope is and all the different things you do. >> we have education classes and we distribute between our programs. we've got a kids cafe program. we've got senior brown bags, mobile pantries and there are over 700 nonprofit agencies that we partner with throughout the washington metro area. >> as people are coming out, what is the best thing for them to bring? >> healthy foods we have a healthy dozen list now. applesauce, peanut butter, canned spinach, all the items that you know are healthy for you are healthy for others. we are live at four different -- there are basic giants that we have the big teams at. but there are 16 participating giants. >> correct. >> how can people make the most of a trip to giant. >> i think giant has $5 bag
